ABSTRACT

Abstract Transplanting time and genotype contribute to improving crop yield and quality of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). A field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of foliar applied of triacontanol (TRIA) and eggplant genotypes 25919, Nirala, 28389 and Pak-10927,transplanted on 1 March,15 March, and 1 April on exposure to high air temperature conditions. The experiment was performed according to Randomized Complete Block Design and the data was analyzed by using Tuckey,s test . The TRIA was applied at 10µM at flowering stage; distilled water was used as the control. Rate of photosynthesis and transpiration, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and effects on antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) were evaluated. The 10µM TRIA increased photosynthesis rate and water use efficiency and yield was improved in all genotypes transplanted at the different dates. Foliar application of 10µM TRIA increased antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD, POD & CAT) and improved physiological as well as biochemical attributes of eggplant genotypes exposed to high heat conditions. Highest activity of dismutase enzyme 5.41mg/1g FW was recorded in Nirala genotype in second transplantation. Whereas, lowest was noted in PAK-10927 (2.30mg/g FW). Maximum fruit yield was found in accession 25919 (1.725kg per plant) at 1st transplantation with Triacontanol, whereas accession PAK-10927 gave the lowest yield (0.285 kg per plant) at control treatment on 3rd transplantation. Genotype, transplanting date and application of TRIA improved growth, yield and quality attributes under of heat stress in eggplant.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study was aimed to investigate Carbofuran (CF)-induced pathological changes in cattle egret. Two hundred cattle egrets were reared and equally divided into four groups and given different CF concentrations (0.03 mg/L, 0.02 mg/L, 0.01 mg/L and 0 mg/L (control group)). Hematology, serum biochemistry, histopathology, and immunological markers were studied. Our results confirm that CF induces anemic conditions, leukocytosis, elevated liver enzymatic activity, and alterations in renal biomarkers. Moreover, specific microscopic lesions such as multifocal necrosis, pyknotic nuclei, hemorrhages, congestion, and inflammatory cell proliferation were observed in the liver, kidney, spleen, and thymus. These findings suggest that CF can induce harmful effects, so the application of this pesticide in the field must be strictly monitored to mitigate the possibility of exposure to non-target species.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This prospective cross‑sectional hospital‑based study was carried out in order to assess the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections among patients with active tuberculosis (TB) disease attending an Outpatient Department (OPD) at the Model Rural Health Research Unit in Ghatampur, a rural village in Kanpur district. Materials and Methods: The socio‑demographic features and clinical profile of the TB patients were analysed in the context of symptoms at the time of testing. The HIV and HBV status were determined and correlated with clinical features at the time of testing. Results: In our study, the prevalence of HIV infection among TB patients is 1.48% (18/1215) and that of HBsAg reactivity was found to be 2.96% (36/1215). During 2007–2010, the HIV‑positivity varied between 1.5% and 1.45% whereas HBV reactivity ranged between 2.4% and 3.63%.A substantial percentage of the TB patients attending the OPD in Ghatampur harbour HIV and HBV infections, which otherwise would remain undiagnosed without serological screening. Conclusion: Co infection with HBV among TB patients potentiate the risk of anti‑tuberculous therapy‑induced hepatotoxicity, therefore, exercising caution and carefully monitoring the patients for drugs associated hepatotoxicity is essential. There is an urgent need to perform population‑based surveys of HIV and hepatitis infections among TB patients to assess the true extent of the problem. Efforts should be made to make physicians aware of the peculiarities and manage these patients effectively.

ABSTRACT

Proteomics is a science that facilitates global analysis of protein expression, molecular interactions and functional states of protein in a cell, organ or organism under consideration. Protein at the molecular level represents the biological endpoint and therefore more suitable to assess cellular responses. Proteins biomarkers are routinely used in cancers for different purposes such as diagnosis, screening and predicting therapy responses. Proteomic science utilise both cell line models and clinical samples to make novel discoveries. Compared to cell lines, clinical samples provide more accurate representation of the tumour micro-environment, explore and identify stromal molecular targets. However, using clinical samples for biomarker discovery has its own challenges. In this review, we aim to provide clinicians an overview of the proteomic biomarker discovery pathway, examine the use of different clinical samples in proteomic research and highlight the limitations and challenges of using clinical samples with proteomic methods.

ABSTRACT

A 65 years patient presented with left ear swelling, swelling of the nasal bridge with congestion of the eyes. Clinically there was evidence of left auricular chondritis, nasal chondritis and conjunctivitis with a history of multiple similar episodes in the past, features suggestive of relapsing polychondritis. The patient improved with oral prednisolone.

ABSTRACT

66 unrelated patients from Southern India with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) were studied for intragenic deletion in 18 exons and Pm region of the DMD gene using multiplex PCR. Of these 41 (62.1%) showed intragenic deletions. 78% of the deletions were located at the distal hotspot region (44-55 exons) and 22% of the deletions were located at the proximal region (exon 2-19). Exon 50 is most frequently deleted. Deletions in isolated cases were significantly more compared to familial cases. The lower incidence reported from South India compared to North India, is suggestive of variations in the Southern and Northern population.

ABSTRACT

Though DNA testing gives precise diagnosis, molecular heterogeneity of disease makes testing an elaborate effort in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in spite of the fact that 60°% of the cases are caused by deletions. The molecular diagnosis of carriers is elaborate needing quantitation of amplifed exonic products. Use of polymorphic markers for other mutations are also involved. We had reported in a large pedigree of DMD with one exonic deletion, the status of calpain by ELISA, CPK and deletion assessed by quantitative PCR (QPCR) in mothers and female siblings. The results pointed to the fact that calpain test is positive in true carriers (showing gene deletion). Status of catpain was assessed in many unrelated female members of DMD families carrying other exonic deletions, which was positive to calpain changes in true carriers.

ABSTRACT

Presence of antibodies in human sera reacting with chloroquine (CQ) was demonstrated from a malaria endemic belt. The study groups consisted of 53 healthy volunteers, receiving regular chloroquine prophylaxis [2 tablets of CQ (150 mg)/wk, single dose], 105 individuals with a history of frequent CQ intake for any febrile attack and 95 individuals from a non-endemic area who had neither a history of malaria nor of previous consumption of CQ. Sixty six per cent individuals taking regular prophylactic chloroquine and about ten per cent of those with a history of taking frequent chloroquine due to febrile illness in the malaria endemic area showed antibodies reacting to chloroquine. However, antichloroquine antibodies were either insignificant or nondetectable in serum samples collected from persons without any history of chloroquine intake. The results indicate a possible interaction of CQ in vivo.

ABSTRACT

Eight females with a family history of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) were analysed for their carrier status by m-calpain test, which monitors the m-calpain (milli-calpain), a proteolytic enzyme in the platelets, using an ELISA technique. Four of the eight females were identified as carriers by virtue of their elevated enzyme levels as compared to control. DNA samples of these members were analysed to ascertain the carrier status, by PCR followed by dosage analysis by densitometry. DNA analysis confirmed the findings by calpain test, which underlines the reliability of this phenotypic test for carrier detection in DMD. Calpain test has been informative in a large group of patients and carriers tested so far. Since the calpain test is cost and labour effective, it is suited for routine and widespread screening purposes.

ABSTRACT

Stool samples from 305 children with diarrhoea and equal number of age and sex matched non-diarrhoeal control children, less than 5 years of age, were examined during the period from Sept 1988 to April 1989. Aeromonas spp. were isolated from 37 (12.1%) diarrhoeal and 05 (1.6%) control cases. Out of 37 diarrhoeal isolates 13 (35.1%) were A. hydrophila, 19 (51.1%) A. sobria and 05 (13.5%) A. caviae. All the isolated strains were tested for haem agglutination property and haemolysin production. Seventeen diarrhoeal and 05 control isolates were tested for cytotoxin production in He La cell line and enterotoxin production in rat ileal loop model and suckling mouse model. Chinese hamster ovary cell (CHO) assay and Gm-1 ELISA methods were also employed. Cytotoxin production was found in 82.5% of diarrhoeal and 40% of control isolates. Haemagglutination was found in 62.1% of Aeromonas isolated from diarrhoeal children and 20% from control children. Enterotoxin production was detected in 58.8% diarrhoeal and none of the control isolates by either of the methods. Of the virulence factors enterotoxin production was found to correlate well with enteropathogenicity but haemolysin, cytotoxin and haemagglutinin did not.

ABSTRACT

Cerebrospinal fluid from 260 children clinically diagnosed as meningitis were examined by Dm, culture, COA and CIE test. Dm revealed the presence of bacteria in 41 (15.8%) whereas culture showed growth of organism in 52 (20%) cases. COA and CIE test were done for the detection of antigen of H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae and N. meningitidis. Among the 3 methods viz. culture, COA and CIE test which were used for the detection of the above three organisms COA detected the maximum numbers (23.5%). COA test could detect antigen in both culture positive and culture negative CSF samples. COA test detected 100% of pneumococcal, 88.5% of H. influenzae and 66.7% of N. meningitidis antigens from CSF. Diagnosis by CIE in detecting H. influenzae and N. meningitidis antigens is inferior to culture and COA, whereas in detecting pneumococcal antigens CIE is superior to culture. So COA is a valuable, cheap, rapid and sensitive method for the diagnosis of meningitis caused by the above three organisms and when used along with culture 100% of cases can be diagnosed.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from 53 urine and 26 stool samples of patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) and 50 stool samples of normal individuals were studied to see their hemolytic, hemagglutinating and 'O' antigenic properties which might be related to virulence of the organism. Significantly higher number of E. coli isolated from urine of UTI patients were found to possess hemolytic, hemagglutinating properties and more frequently belonged to certain "O" antigenic groups either singly or in combination as compared to those isolated from stool of both UTI patients and normal individuals. Hemagglutinating property appeared to be most frequently associated with UTI.
